Stebuklas

You can find the Stebuklas, or miracle between the Cathedral and the bell tower.
Basically it's a large piece of tile believed to perform wonders.
On August 23, 1989 about 2 million protesting
Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians created a human chain stretching
from the Cathedral all the way to Tallin.
The Stebuklas is a symbol of freedom and hope. Rumor has it if you stand and
make a wish, turn once in a clockwise circle your wish will come true.
Can you think of what I wished for?

Treasure hunting is one of my favorite things to do in Vilnius.
Take a look at some of the treasures I found.

Happy Weekend!!!

Farmers Market in Lithuania

Today we headed out to the Turgus...aka the farmers market.
We ended up buying mushrooms, blueberries and cherries.
I was a little disappointed that I could not find cherry tomatoes or wild
strawberries.
I'm told that I will be able to find some at the other outdoor markets.

Happy to be in Lithuania!!!

Poetry

I just can't get enough of Neruda's poetry.
Here is yet another favorite:

"Of everything I have seen,
it's you I want to go on seeing:
of everything I've touched,
it's your flesh I want to go on touching.
I love your orange laughter.
I am moved by the sight of you sleeping.

What am I to do, love, loved one?
I don't know how others love
or how people loved in the past.
I live, watching you, loving you.
Being in love is my nature."

Summer Garden

The Summer Garden is in full bloom.
Lemons, Figs and Rosemary anyone?

These are my fathers prized Dahlia's that he plants every year in
Spring.
They remind him of his mothers garden on the the farm
where he grew up in Lithuania.

Happy Tuesday!!!

Blue-berry Cherry Cobbler Recipe from Saveur

The perfect Summer Dessert.

Blueberry–Cherry Cobbler

4 tbsp. vegetable shortening

3⁄4 cup plus 1 tbsp. sugar
2 tbsp. cornstarch
1⁄4 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 cups fresh blueberries
2 cups frozen sour cherries
1⁄2 tsp. lemon juice
1⁄8 tsp. almond extract
1 cup flour
1 1⁄2 tsp. baking powder
1⁄2 tsp. kosher salt
1⁄2 cup milk

1. Heat oven to 400°. Grease an 8" x 8" baking dish with 1 tbsp. shortening; set aside. Whisk 3⁄4 cup sugar, cornstarch, and cinnamon in a 2-qt. saucepan over medium-high heat. Add blueberries and cherries; cook until thickened, 7–8 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in lemon juice and almond extract. Pour filling into baking dish; set aside.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk remaining sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt. With fingers, work remaining shortening into flour until pea-size lumps form. Stir in milk to form a dough. Place heaping tablespoonfuls of dough evenly over filling. Bake until golden and bubbling, 35–40 minutes.

My favorite Oprah quotes

 "Forgiveness
is letting go of the hope
 that the past
   can be changed."

"The more you praise and
celebrate your life,
 the more there is in
life to celebrate"

"You get in life what
 you have the
 courage
 to ask for."

"You don't become what you want,
 you become what you believe."

"If a man wants you,
nothing can keep him away.
If he doesn't want you,
 nothing can make him stay."

Pablo Neruda

I do not love you except because I love you;
I go from loving to not loving you,
From waiting to not waiting for you
My heart moves from cold to fire.

I love you only because it's you the one I love;
I hate you deeply, and hating you
Bend to you, and the measure of my changing love for you
Is that I do not see you but love you blindly.

Maybe January light will consume
My heart with its cruel
Ray, stealing my key to true calm.

In this part of the story I am the one who
Dies, the only one, and I will die of love because I love you,
Because I love you, Love, in fire and blood.

Food for thought...

Life doesn't give you the people you want.

It gives you the people you need.

To help you, to hurt you, to love you, to leave you.

To make you into the person you were meant to be.

Pablo Neruda

"Love.

Because of you, in gardens of blossoming
Flowers I ache from the perfumes of spring.
I have forgotten your face, I no longer
Remember your hands; how did your lips
Feel on mine?

Because of you, I love the white statues
Drowsing in the parks, the white statues that
Have neither voice nor sight.

I have forgotten your voice, your happy voice;
I have forgotten your eyes.

Like a flower to its perfume, I am bound to
My vague memory of you. I live with pain
That is like a wound; if you touch me, you will
Make to me an irreperable harm.

Your caresses enfold me, like climbing
Vines on melancholy walls.

I have forgotten your love, yet I seem to
Glimpse you in every window.

Because of you, the heady perfumes of
Summer pain me; because of you, I again
Seek out the signs that precipitate desires:
Shooting stars, falling objects."

If You Forget Me

I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
remember
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

But
if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine
Pablo Neruda
